About Mahjong For A Mission
MISSION:
Mahjong for a Mission partners with charities in Central Texas by hosting Mahjong events that bring awareness and community philanthropic support through the traditional game of Mahjong.
HISTORY:
Mahjong for a Mission began the fall of 2024, and was born out of friendship, hardship and the joy of playing Mahjong.
Co-founders Laura McNutt and Emily Miller became friends during the height of the COVID pandemic when Emily’s family moved in next door. Mahjong was part of Laura and Emily’s friendship from the start. Laura learned to play Mahjong from her mother in 2010, and it’s become a game that her family enjoys - even the little nieces and granddaughters! Laura taught Emily the game of Mahjong, and they quickly became obsessed playing together. Laura and Emily, along with a monthly group of friends called the Waco Mahjong Society, began playing regularly and they observed a group of avid Mahjong-lovers flourish in Waco.
In April of 2023, Laura visited Hillcrest Urgent Care on a Thursday morning and was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer. Laura quickly began chemotherapy. The McNutt family received an abundance of love and care from Central Texas friends and family that, even in the midst of treatment, Laura considered ways she could give back to their community of Waco.
Not long after her diagnosis, Laura attended a Mahjong charity event in Dallas and knew this was what she wanted to start; A Waco mahjong charity event. With Emily’s background in events and fundraising for a variety of nonprofits, Laura knew she wanted to involve Emily in pulling it all together. With Laura’s new mission, Emily’s event experience, their endearing friendship and love for the game of Mahjong, Mahjong for a Mission (MFAM) was born.
Mahjong for a Mission strives to bring awareness and support to charities in Central Texas through the game of Mahjong, and they’re excited to bring the joy of community philanthropic support, awareness and the joy of Mahjong to Central Texas!
